Back-To-Back: Bentley Wins 2009 Northeast-10 Field Hockey Championship



Easton, Mass. - The Bentley University field hockey team won its second straight Northeast-10 Championship with a 2-1 victory over Stonehill College Sunday afternoon at W.B. Mason Stadium on the campus of Stonehill College.

Freshman Nicole Dion (Lunenburg, Mass.) scored the eventual game-winning goal midway through the first half on a tip in from the far post for the Falcons. Senior Nicole Murphy (Deham, Mass.) and sophomore Stephanie Sideris (Watertown, Mass.) assisted on the goal.

Bentley jumped out to the early lead when senior Allison St. Jean (Lebanon, Maine) knocked in her eighth goal of the season off a scramble in front of the net in the 11th minute.

The Falcons doubled their lead in the 20th minute when Dion scored her ninth goal of the season.

In the second half Stonehill's offense piled on the shots as the Skyhawks outshot the Falcons 6-0 in the half. In the 54th minute, junior Lindsay Pinkham (Skowhegan, Maine) received a pass from senior Stephanie Kott (Rutland, Mass.) and scored her fifth goal of the season to cut the Bentley lead in half, 2-1.

The Bentley defense kept the Stonehill offense in check as they kept the Skyhawks off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game to secure the 2-1 victory.

Bentley senior goalkeeper Alyssa Sliney (Brewster, Mass.) made five saves in net and earned All-Championship honors. Joining Sliney on the All-Championship team is Sideris and the championship's most outstanding player, Murphy.

Stonehill senior Jackie Ladino (North Dartmouth, Mass.) and Kott were also named to the All-Championship team.

The remaining members of the All-Championship team include, Adelphi's Danielle DeMola, UMass Lowell's Liz Day and Molly Clay, Merrimack's Kerri Bergquist and Katie Zubkus and Southern Connecticut's Lauren Zarrella.

Bentley improves to 16-4 overall, while Stonehill is now 17-4. Both teams will await word on possible NCAA tournament bids.

With 16 member institutions the Northeast-10 shares the distinction of being the largest Division II conference in the country along with the PSAC and WVIAC. Its 23 championship sports provide athletic opportunities for over 5,500 student-athletes, the largest such program of any Division II conference.

Stonehill and Bentley to Meet in NE-10 Championship Final



Easton, Mass. - Top seed Stonehill College and second seeded Bentley University will meet up in the Northeast-10 Championship Final tomorrow afternoon after both teams recorded shutout victories in the semifinals earlier today at W.B. Mason Stadium on the campus of Stonehill College.

Stonehill defeated Merrimack College, 3-0, in the first semifinal game and Bentley was victorious over the University of Massachusetts Lowell, 1-0, in the later game. The Skyhawks and Falcons will be facing each other for the first time ever in the Northeast-10 Championship game.

This morning, the Stonehill offense to waste any time getting started as the Skyhawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when junior Courtney Foley (Wakefield, Mass.) scored her sixth goal of the year off a pass from Claire Hourihan (East Amherst, N.Y.) from the right side off a penalty corner. Stonehill, the conference leader in penalty corners, held an 8-2 advantage in the first half for corners. For the game, the Skyhawks recorded 18 penatly corners.

The game remained 1-0 in Stonehill's favor through halftime, however early in the second half senior Jackie Ladino (North Dartmouth, Mass.) scored her 12th goal of the season after knocking in a loose ball off a rebound. The Stonehill defense kept the Merrimack offense at bay as they held the Warriors to only three shots throughout the game.

Stonehill scored its third goal of the contest late in the second half when sophomore Kathryn Nelson (Shrewsbury, Mass.) connected for her tenth goal of the season.

Merrimack goalkeeper Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, Mass.) made 12 saves in the contest.

With the win Stonehill improves to 17-3, while Merrimack drops to 13-8.

In the second semifinal contest, Bentley sophomore Stephanie Sideris (Watertown, Mass.) scored the games only goal late in the second half as she knocked in a loose ball from the far side off a corner. It was her tenth goal of the year.

Both teams battled through a scoreless first half as each team's goalkeepers made five saves each. Bentley's Alyssa Sliney (Brewster, Mass.) finished with nine saves, while UMass Lowell's Amy Carbon (Bellingham, Mass.) made six saves.

Bentley improves to 15-4 with the win, while UMass Lowell is now 16-5.

UMass Lowell and Merrimack Advance to NE-10 Semifinals



South Easton, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Lowell defeated Southern Connecticut State University, 4-1, to advance to the NE-10 field hockey semifinals. An hour later, Merrimack College joined them as the Warriors defeated Adelphi University, 2-1 in quarterfinal action.

In the first quarterfinal of the afternoon, third seeded UMass Lowell took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute when senior Jaci Moulton (Baldwinville, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal off a rebound. The score remained 1-0 entering the second half, however that quickly changed as UMass Lowell piled on three additional goals in a ten minute span. Katie Enaire (Amesbury, Mass.) scored in the early minutes of the half followed by Sammy Macy's (Tewksbury, Mass.) 23rd goal of the season. Enaire would add another goal minutes later to give UMass Lowell a 4-0 lead.

Southern Connecticut cut the lead to 4-1 when Kelly Ann McCafferty (Durham, N.H.) scored her 10th goal of the season in the 56th minnute.

JuniorLauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) made a game-high 13 saves in goal for the Owls.

With the victory, UMass Lowell will advance to the semifinal round and face defending champion, Bentley University, 2 p.m. on Saturday.

In the other quarterfinal contest, Merrimack defeated Adelphi for the third time this season with a 2-1 victory to advance to the Northeast-10 semifinals for the first time in team history. Freshman April Daugherty (Lincoln, R.I.) scored the first goal of the game in the 15th minute to give the Warriors an early 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Sarah Salatto (Guilford, Conn.) scored the game's eventual game-winning goal seven minutes into the second half off a rebound. Adelphi cut the score in half late in the second half when Emilee Rahner (Setauket, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season.

Despite the comeback, the Warriors held off the Adelphi offense and conserved the 2-1 victory. Freshman Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, Mass.) made four saves in goal for Merrimack, while her counterpart Lucia Vigliotti (Westbury, N.Y.) recorded eight saves for the Panthers.

Merrimack will face top seed and host of the final four, Stonehill College in the semifinals at 11 a.m. on Saturday.



Stonehill Earns Top Seed in Upcoming NE-10 Championship


South Easton, Mass. – The Stonehill College field hockey team earned the top seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Championship after finishing the season 9-1 in conference play. The Skyhawks also claimed their first NE-10 Regular Season Title since 2006 and second overall.

Bentley University (14-4, 8-2 NE-10) received the second seed in the championship after finishing with a 8-2 conference record. Both the Skyhawks and Falcons will receive quarterfinal byes in the championship.

Adelphi University, the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Merrimack College all finished with a conference record of 7-3 resulting in a three-way tie for third place. As a result of the conference’s tie-breaking procedures, UMass Lowell (15-4, 7-3 NE-10) received the third seed, followed by Merrimack (12-7, 7-3 NE-10) and Adelphi (12-7, 7-3).

Southern Connecticut State University (6-13, 5-5 NE-10) finished tied with Franklin Pierce University with a 5-5 conference record, however due to the Owls conference victory over the Ravens, Southern Connecticut received the sixth and final spot in the championship.

Quarterfinal contests include #5 Adelphi at #4 Merrimack, while #6 Southern Connecticut travels to #3 UMass Lowell. Both contests are scheduled for 3 p.m.

The semifinal round will take place at Stonehill College on Saturday, October 31 with the winner of the Adelphi/Merrimack contest taking on #1 Stonehill at 11 a.m. followed by the winner of Southern Connecticut/UMass Lowell facing #2 Bentley at 2 p.m.

The championship game is slated for 12 p.m. on Sunday, November 1 at Stonehill College.
