Remaining Top Seeds Advance to Semifinals



Lowell, Mass. – Eighth seeded Southern Connecticut State University upset top seeded University of New Haven, 3-2, in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Volleyball Championship Friday night at UMass Lowell.

The Owls are playing in their first ever Northeast-10 Championship and will face fourth seeded and host UMass Lowell in the semifinals, while No. 2 Adelphi University will meet No. 3 Bentley University in the other semifinal match. Both matches are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday. The winner of each semifinal match will meet up later that night at 7 p.m. in the Northeast-10 Championship Final. Southern Connecticut (26-9) took the first set against New Haven (24-5) as the two teams battled back and forth in a competitive five set match. The Owls won the first set 27-25 to jump out to the early 1-0 lead; however the Chargers rebounded and took set two by the score of 25-17. Southern Connecticut took control of the match winning set three (25-19) before New Haven won set four 25-19. The Owls rallied and recorded the fifth set win, 15-11, to pull off the upset over New Haven.

Junior Jenna Tammel (Spring Valley, Minn.) led Southern Connecticut with 14 kills and added a team-high 24 digs, while sophomore Megan Lyons (Cold Spring, N.Y.) added 11 kills and 11 digs. New Haven’s Sara Malmlov (Lindesberg, Sweden) led the team with 19 kills to go along with nine digs, while freshman Keidy Candelaria (Vega Baja, P.R.) recorded 18 kills and 21 digs. Sophomore Heather Ladao (West Covina, Calif.) had a match-high 28 digs for the Chargers.

Adelphi (26-8) faced No. 7 American International College (23-10) as the Panthers are competing in the Northeast-10 championship in their first year as a member of the conference. Adelphi jumped out to an early lead taking the first set 25-12. The Panthers took a close second set, 25-20, to take a 2-0 lead. However, American International bounced back and took control of the third set 29-27 to force a fourth set. Both teams battled to a close fourth set until Adelphi closed it out for a 26-24 victory winning the match 3-1.

Adelphi was led by freshman outside hitter Chelsea Overholt (Centrevilla, Va.) who collected 18 kills, while junior Hilary Pavels (North Woodmere, N.Y.) added 14 kills to go along with 15 digs. American International’s redshirt freshman Taila de Souza (Cunupia, Trinidad & Tobago) posted a match-high 25 kills and 16 digs.

Bentley (17-11) won three straight sets after dropping the first set 25-22 to No. 6 Le Moyne College (17-10) to advance to the Northeast-10 semifinals for the 23rd time. The Falcons won 25-22, 25-15 and 25-18 to take the match in four sets. Bentley was led by senior Alex Kearney (La Jolla, Calif.) who recorded 13 kills and 15 digs, while freshman Amy Waitkus (Phoenix, Ariz.) added double figures in kills (10) and digs (13). Senior Cassie Kraft (New Braunfels, Texas) recorded a team-high 24 digs for the Falcons.

Le Moyne’s Elizabeth Cheek (Huntington Beach, Calif.) had a match high 16 kills to go along with 23 digs to lead the Dolphins.

Later in the evening, UMass Lowell (20-9) defeated No. 5 Pace University (17-11) 3-1 to advance to the semifinals. The River Hawks took control of the match by taking the first set 25-18, however Pace bounced back to tie the match 1-1 after taking set number two, 25-22. UMass Lowell wasted little time to rebound as the River Hawks took set three, 25-15 and then went on to win a close fourth set by the score of 28-26.

UMass Lowell was led by junior Sarah Coscia (Pittsfield, Mass.) who recorded a team high 13 kills, while Vicky Wong (Tewksbury, Mass.) added 11 kills to go along with six digs. Nichole Rondeau (Dracut, Mass.) finished with a team-best 35 assists. Pace junior middle blocker Victoria Pompilus (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) recorded 13 kills while hitting .417. Junior Stephanie Kazmiercza (Buffalo, N.Y.) had 23 digs for the Setters.
