South Easton, Mass. – The Northeast-10 Conference announced
that Saint Michael’s College women’s tennis player
Cailie Burns (Chepachet, R.I.) and Southern Connecticut State
University men’s soccer player Kieron Jennings (Dagenhan,
England) have been selected as the league’s nominees for the
2007 NCAA Sportsmanship Award.
The award honors student-athletes who have demonstrated one or more
of the ideals of sportsmanship, including fairness, civility,
honesty, unselfishness, respect and responsibility. Each conference
is allowed to nominate one male and one female student-athlete for
this award. The NCAA will select a male and female winner from each
of the three divisions as finalists, then one male and female will
be selected from the finalists as winners, which will be announced
later this month.
Burns, a four-year letter winner of the Saint Michael’s
women’s tennis team, finished the 2006-2007 season with a
12-9 overall record at No. 3 singles and 11-10 at No. 1 doubles.
Her accomplishments on the court were recognized as Burns was
selected to the Northeast-10 All Conference Second-Team for singles
and doubles. In addition, she was also the recipient of the
Northeast-10 Women’s Tennis F. Paul Bogan Memorial
Sportsmanship Award.
Burns was also the recipient of the Diane C. Foster Award, at Saint
Michael’s, which she received in May as the female
student-athlete who exemplifies, by their actions, true compassion,
sacrifice and service to others.
Off the court Burns is a two-year member of the MOVE (Mobilization
of Volunteer Efforts) Core team, she has completed three extended
service trips to Immokalee, Fla. to participate in Habitat for
Humanity and has served as a mentor for DREAM (Directing through
Recreation, Education, Adventure and Mentoring) for four years and
served as co-chair of the program for two.
Burns graduated from Saint Michael’s in May and will be
joining AmeriCorps VISTA, continuing her service work with
youngsters in the greater Burlington area.
Jennings, a two-year member of the Southern Connecticut men’s
soccer team, helped lead the Owls to the NCAA Division II
Quarterfinals with a 17-3-3 overall record. Jennings appeared in 41
career games and only received one yellow card and never received a
red card during the course of his career. While carrying the
workload of collegiate athletics, Jennings maintained a GPA of 3.96
in his graduate degree studies.
“In my years of coaching I can not think of anyone who has
shown more respect for the game, opponents and officials than
Kieron Jennings,” said Southern Connecticut head soccer coach
Tom Lang. “He is a perfect example of sportsmanship and
class.”
Off the field, Jennings has volunteered in helping with
coaches’ clinics and has also worked with Southern
Connecticut’s camp program as a coach and as a counselor as
well as camps off campus in the surrounding communities.
Jennings graduated from Southern Connecticut in May and is pursuing
job opportunities in England in the London financial district.
Sponsoring 23 championship sports and 15 full-time members, the
Northeast-10 is the second largest NCAA Division II athletic
