NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University athletic department has announced the creation of the ‘Blue Crew’ initiative in support of all Owls’ teams. In an effort to create momentum for this new program, there will be at least one ‘Blue Crew’ t-shirt giveaway event for all teams competing at home this year.

The program will kick off when the volleyball team takes on Post University on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. at Pelz Gymnasium. The first 75 fans in attendance will receive a ‘Blue Crew’ t-shirt courtesy of the athletic department. Furthermore, there will be selected ‘Code Blue’ events during the year for marquee matchups, and all fans are asked to wear blue in support of the Owls at those games.

“I am extremely excited that we are kicking off our ‘Blue Crew’ initiative this fall,” said Director of Athletics Patricia D. Nicol. “We are always looking for new opportunities to enhance both our school spirit and gameday environment in a positive manner, and the creation of the ‘Blue Crew’ aligns directly with those two components. I hope that it will serve as a source of pride and help unify all Owls’ fans at our athletic contests.”

‘Blue Crew’ events have already been determined for each of the Owls’ five fall team sports.

The first 50 fans at the field hockey game against American International on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. will also receive a ‘Blue Crew’ t-shirt.

The next opportunity for fans to bleed blue will be when the women’s soccer team battles with the College of St. Rose on Sept. 30. The first 75 fans at the 7 p.m. kickoff will receive a ‘Blue Crew’ t-shirt.

The first 200 fans at the Oct. 2 football game against New Haven will also receive ‘Blue Crew’ t-shirts.

The final ‘Blue Crew’ opportunity for the fall sports season will be when the men’s soccer team faces Franklin Pierce at 7 p.m. on Oct. 3. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive t-shirts at that contest.

The program will continue at winter and spring sporting events throughout the remainder of the 2009-10 academic year.
