South Easton, Mass. – Southern Connecticut State University junior outfielder Karl Derbacher (Northford, Conn.) was named the 2008 Northeast-10 Baseball Player of the Year as voted by the conference’s 13 coaches.

Derbacher helped lead the Owls to the Northeast-10 Tournament Championship Round after finishing the season second with a 24-6 conference record. He ranks among the conferences elite in all major offensive categories. Derbacher currently ranks first in doubles (19), runs batted in (51), second in batting average (.413), hits (83), stolen bases (28), on-base percentage (.500) third in slugging percentage (.557), triples (5) and is fourth in runs (50). He is also ranked among the NCAA Division II leaders in batting average, triples, on-base percentage and stolen bases. In addition, he was selected to the All Northeast-10 First-Team.

Franklin Pierce University junior Mike Adams (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Southern Connecticut sophomore Jim Fuller (Marlborough, Mass.) were selected 2008 Northeast-10 Co-Pitchers of the Year. Adams currently is tied for the conference lead in wins with Fuller with nine. His stat line includes an earned run average of 0.98 in 92 innings of work and has pitched two complete games with 91 strikeouts. Adams leads the NE-10 in ERA, is second in innings pitched and third in opposing batting average (.169). Nationally among the Division II leaders, Adams is second in ERA, eighth in hits per nine innings and ranks in the top 20 in strikeouts. He was also selected to the All Northeast-10 First-Team.

Fuller is currently 9-2 this season with an ERA of 1.31, second best in the Northeast-10, and has struck out 132 batters in 89 innings of work. He leads the conference in opposing batting average (.163), strikeouts, and is fourth in innings pitched. Fuller also ranks second among the Division II leaders in strikeouts and hits per nine innings and is ranked in the top 10 in earned run average. He also earned a spot on the All Northeast-10 First-Team.

Bentley College freshman outfielder James Roche (Arlington, Mass.) was named the 2008 Northeast-10 Freshman of the Year. In just his first year of collegiate play, Roche finished the season a .342 batting average that ranks him in the top 15 among the conference leaders. He is currently tied for second with seven home runs and is in the top ten with 65 hits. Roche drove in 32 runs and scored 29 as he slugged .521 on the year with 11 doubles and one triple. He was also named to the All Northeast-10 Second-Team.

Southern Connecticut’s Tim Shea was voted the 2008 Northeast-10 Coach of the Year. Shea guided the Owls to a 36-16 overall record and a second-place finish in the conference with a 24-6 record. This marks the second time in his career that he won the award (2005 and 2008). Southern Connecticut advanced to the NE-10 Championship Round of the tournament.

Sponsoring 23 championship sports and 15 full-time members, the Northeast-10 is the second largest NCAA Division II athletic conference in the nation and sponsors the most championships of any Division II conference.
