NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Southern Connecticut State University
sophomore pitcher Jim Fuller (Marlborough, Mass.) was selected by
the New York Mets in the 21st round of the 2008 Major League
Baseball Draft on Friday. The Owls’ All-American is the
second- highest selection in program history.
Fuller becomes the fifth Owl since 1967 to be tabbed in the MLB
draft, joining Bob Brooder (Cleveland – 1967 – 45th
round), Paul Barretta (New York Yankees – 1969 – 32nd
round), Mike Smith (Milwaukee - 1983 – 28th round) and Rob
Cafaro (Tampa Bay – 1996 – 11th round).
The southpaw enjoyed a phenomenal season in 2008. He was named an
All-American by the NCBWA (First-Team), ABCA/Rawlings and
Daktronics (both Second-Team) and was also previously selected as
both the ABCA/Rawlings Northeast Region and Northeast-10 Pitcher of
the Year.
In 2008, he led the nation in strikeouts (145), ranked second in
strikeouts per nine innings (13.45) and was also among the top-10
nationally in hits allowed per nine innings and earned-run
average.
During the regular season, he led the Northeast-10 in ERA (0.99),
opponent batting average (.163) and strikeouts (125). In addition,
the southpaw finished tied for first in the conference in wins
(nine) and fourth in innings pitched (82.0). Between Feb. 17 and
April 19, Fuller went 59 consecutive innings without allowing an
earned run.
Fuller has also been selected to participate in the New England
College Baseball All-Star Game, which will take place at Fenway
Park on June 14. Game time is set for noon.
The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team concluded
the 2008 season with a 36-19 mark and reached the NCAA Tournament
for the third time in the past four years.
