Notes:
Southern Connecticut: The Owls first trip to the NCAA Division II World Series ended on Tuesday (May 31) with a 3-2, 10-inning loss to Grand Valley State. Southern finished the season at 31-14 and, when the final NCAA Division II statistics are released this week, should lead in team earned run average with a final 1.99 ERA. Coach Tim Shea?s team has led the category for most of the 2005 season with all four regular starters under a 2.00 ERA. Freshman Justin Cox did not pitch in Alabama but his 0.91 ERA over 69 innings could also be the best individual mark in Division II for the NE-10 freshman of the year. Junior Jeff Farrell pitched well against the Lakers, allowing six hits and two runs in seven and two-thirds innings with five walks and three strikeouts. He was not involved in the decision. Shea and Southern pitching coach Scott Berney were on the coaching staff for the Division II-III all-stars Sunday night in the annual New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) all-star game at Fenway Park. Southern junior pitcher Matt Hennessey and senior first/third baseman Mel Davis were also selected to play in the game.
