Player of the Week
Jeremy Terni, Southern Connecticut (Sr., DH, Uncasville, CT) - In three games at the NCAA Northeast regional was named the most outstanding player after hitting .692 (9-13, 2B, HR, 5 RBI) and slugged 1.000. Scored the winning run of a 1-0 win over Franklin Pierce on a suicide squeeze in the championship game.
Pitcher of the Week
Jeff Farrell, Southern Connecticut (Jr., SP, Naugatuck, CT) - Earned all-tournament honors at the NCAA Northeast Regional. In the championship game, tossed a complete game, 1-0 shutout over Franklin Pierce, allowing nine hits while striking out nine with just two walks.
Freshman of the Week
Tim Manton, UMass Lowell (Fr., OF, Swansea, MA) – Hit .600 (9-15, 5 R, 2 RBI, 2B, 3B) in a 1-2 week at the NCAA Northeast Regional. Highlights include a 5-for-6 effort (3 R, 2 RBI, 2B, 3B) in a 16-11 loss to Franklin Pierce.
Weekly Honor Roll:
Elliott Shea, Franklin Pierce (Jr., OF, Jaffrey, NH) - Named to the All-Tournament team at the NCAA Northeast Regional. Hit .429 (6 R, 4 2B, 5 RBI). Was a combined 8-for-11 in two elimination game wins on Friday. Was 4-5 (2B, 3 R, 2 RBI) against Adelphi. Went 4-6 (3 R, 3 RBI, program record 3 2B) against UMass Lowell.
Tyler Cummings, Franklin Pierce (Jr., SP, South Paris, ME) - Allowed an unearned run while scattering six hits (0 BB, 3 K) in a CG effort against Southern Connecticut in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship game.
Mike Chambers, Franklin Pierce (Jr., 2B, Londonderry, MA) - Was named to the NCAA Northeast Regional All-Tournament team as he notched three home runs and a team-best six RBI and six runs scored. Hit a combined 4-for-8 (3 HR, 2B, 6 RBI, 6 R) in two elimination game wins on Friday. Was 2-4 (2B, HR, 3 RBI) against Adelphi. Hit 2-4 (3 R, 3 RBI, program record 2 HR) against UMass Lowell.
Matt Anderson, Franklin Pierce (Fr., C, Medford, MA) - Hit .375 (6-16, RBI) at the NCAA Northeast Regional. Went 2-4 in a loss to UMass Lowell, and 1-4 (RBI) in a win over UMass Lowell. Went 3-for-4 against Southern Connecticut in the final.
Nate Liebenow, UMass Lowell (Sr., DH, Hampton, NH) – Hit .538 (7-13, 4 RBI, 4 R, 3 2B, 2 BB, HR) in a 1-2 week at the NCAA Northeast Regional. Went 4-for-4 (3 R, BB, 2B) in an 8-2 win over Franklin Pierce. Went 2-for-5 (2 RBI, 2 2B) in a 16-11 loss to Franklin Pierce.
Matt Hennessey, Southern Connecticut (Jr., SP, Wallingford, CT) - Earned all-tournament honors at the NCAA Northeast regional championship. Pitched a CG, 6-1 win over Adelphi (8 H, 2 BB, 6 K).
Tyler Call, Southern Connecticut (Sr., SS, Hopkinton, MA) - Named to the all-tournament team at the NCAA Northeast regional. He hit .400 (6-15, 2B, RBI) and was error-free in 12 chances. Had three hits (R, RBI) in a 10-3 win over UMass Lowell.
Mel Davis, Southern Connecticut (Sr., 3B, Bristol, CT) - Hit .462 (6-13) at the NCAA Northeast regional. Had three hits (2 RBI) in a win over UMass Lowell. Added two hits in the championship game win over Franklin Pierce.
Notes:
Southern Connecticut: The Owls will make their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II World Series later this week, meeting the University of North Florida on Sunday in an opening round game. In wins over Adelphi (6-1), UMass Lowell (10-3) and host Franklin Pierce (1-0), Coach Tim Shea's team batted .320 and had a 1.00 ERA and lowered their Division II-leading ERA to 1.95. Southern heads to the World Series with all four starting pitchers under 2.00 in ERA. Freshman Justin Cox (4-2, 0.91 in 69 innings) has led the nation and is followed closely by junior Matt Hennessey (7-2, 1.36 in 86 and 1/3 innings), junior Joe Vingo (4-1, 1.60 in 45 innings) and junior Jeff Farrell (7-1, 1.90 in 66 and 1/3 innings).
Franklin Pierce: Franklin Pierce made its second NCAA Tournament appearance over three years as it hosted the NCAA Northeast Regional for the first time. The Ravens matched the program record with 32 wins, marking the third-straight season they have won 32 times. Under Head Coach Jayson King, Franklin Pierce has set or matched the program record for wins in each of his seven seasons at the helm. Junior Mike Chambers (Londonderry, N.H.) registered his 18th double of the season on Saturday, breaking the program record of 17 set by former teammate Eric Cavers in 2003. Chambers' 44 career doubles is tied with former teammate Dante Blacarte for first in program history. Chambers and junior Shawn Hayes (Charlton, Mass.) both matched a school record by homering twice in games on Friday. Hayes hit two to lead the Ravens past Adelphi, before Chambers homered twice against UMass Lowell. Junior Elliott Shea (Jaffrey, N.H.) also matched a record with three doubles against UMass Lowell on Friday. Sophomore Vinny Pennell (Spencer, Mass.) finished the season with 24 steals, breaking Shea's single-season record of 23 set in 2004.
UMass Lowell: UMass Lowell enjoyed its 15th NCAA Tournament appearance in school history and eighth bid in the last nine seasons. UML senior C Miles Page and freshman CF Tim Manton were each named to the Northeast Regional All-Tournament Team. Manton hit 9 for 15 (.600) five runs and two RBI while Page went 3 for 14 with three RBI and a home run. Peter Nickerson and Ronnie Nelson were among several River Hawks who received postseason honors this weekend as both were named to the first team of the ABCA Rawlings Northeast All-Region Team and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-Northeast Region Team. Also cited to the ABCA-Rawlings Team were Page and Nate Liebenow, named to the second team. Page was also a first team member of the NCBWA Team.
