American International and Southern Connecticut Receive Bids to NCAA Division II Football Tournament
American International College and Southern Connecticut State
University received postseason bids as the NCAA Division II
Football Committee announced the field of 24 teams for the 2008
NCAA Division II Football Championship Sunday afternoon.
American International will host a first-round game on Saturday,
November 15 as Seton Hill University will make the trip to
Springfield, Mass. Southern Connecticut will travel to West
Chester, Pa. to face West Chester University. Both contests will
begin at noon.
The Yellow Jackets are making their first-ever appearance in the
NCAA Division II Football tournament after finishing the regular
season 9-1 overall. American International claimed their first
Northeast-10 Regular Season Championship with a perfect 7-0
conference record.
Southern Connecticut is making their fourth straight NCAA
appearance as the Owls finished the regular season on a seven-game
winning streak for an overall record of 8-2 and 6-1 in Northeast-10
action. Last year the Owls advanced to the second-round of the NCAA
tournament after defeating Bryant University 45-28 before falling
to California of Pennsylvania.
Southern Connecticut’s appearance in the second-round of the
NCAA tournament marked the third-straight year that a Northeast-10
school reached the second round. In 2005 C.W. Post advanced to the
NCAA quarterfinals and Merrimack advanced to the second-round in
2006.
The first-round winners will all advance to face a bye team in
their super regional in the second round.
