WALTHAM, Mass. -- Bentley University senior captain and free safety
Chris Carroll (Lynn/Lynn English HS) is this week’s recipient
of the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Gold Helmet Award for the
college division following his outstanding performance in the
Falcons’ 17-14 win over Southern Connecticut State Friday
night.
The award, given in recognition of the premier performance by a
Division II or III football player in New England, was presented
Wednesday afternoon at Harvard University during the weekly New
England Football Writers luncheon.
Carroll, previously named the Defensive Player of the Week in the
Northeast-10, tied a Bentley single game record with three
interceptions and also had five tackles, including one for a loss,
as the Falcons ran their record to 6-1. He’s now tied for
fourth in Division II in interceptions with seven.
Each of the picks came with the game tied. The first was in the
second quarter and led to a Falcon go-ahead TD. The next two came
in the third quarter, one at the Bentley 14 that he returned 42
yards and the second at the Bentley 22.
Carroll’s seven interceptions are more than four Northeast-10
teams have, and same number as a fifth. He’s one of only six
players in Division II to have at least three interceptions in a
game this season.
Carroll is the second Bentley player to receive the prestigious
Gold Helmet this season, doing so six weeks after QB Bryant Johnson
(Hopedale/Milford HS) captured one for his effort in the
season-opener at Ohio Dominican.
Only two Bentley defensive players have previously received a Gold
Helmet, Ben Nassar in 1998 and Steve Patten three years before
that.
