About the Greyhounds

Assumption College is a co-ed, residential, comprehensive, liberal arts and professional studies College, founded by the Assumptionists in the Catholic intellectual tradition.

MISSION:

"The College, rooted in the Catholic intellectual tradition, strives to form graduates known for critical intelligence, thoughtful citizenship and compassionate service. We pursue these ambitious goals through a curriculum grounded in the liberal arts and extending to the domain of professional studies. Enlivened by the Catholic affirmation of the harmony of faith and reason, we aim, by the pursuit of the truth, to transform the minds and hearts of students. Assumption favors diversity and ecumenically welcomes all who share its goals."

The College prides itself in its highly competent, charismatic faculty, with 131 full-time professors, of which over 94% hold a terminal degree.  It holds to a 14:1 student-faculty ratio in the undergraduate school. Faculty are encouraged to pursue professional development and research opportunities. However, their primary goal at the undergraduate level is to nurture students in their academic development.  It is this mentoring relationship that alumni continually reference when discussing their professional and personal successes.

Curriculum and co-curriculum are strategically integrated. Given the residential nature of the College, where almost 90% of students reside on campus, opportunities abound for involvement at all levels.  The College competes in N.C.A.A. Division II athletics, with nearly 450 students participating in 22 varsity sports.

The Blue & White initiated its athletics (baseball) program in 1912, played with the 'giants' of college hockey in the teens, and first sponsored basketball in 1923-24. The Greyhound was adopted as the official athletic mascot in 1933 at the suggestion of a young priest who thought the basketball team was as fast as a Greyhound. Football became part of the campus in 1967 as part of the nationwide 'club' movement. It was raised to varsity status, the last of the original clubs to make the move, in 1988.

The College became co-educational in 1969 and first sponsored sports for women in 1972 . . . it was the first College in the region to offer aid to its female athletes.

The College however is more than just football . . . it's more than just an impressive physical plant. It is a place that gets better every day because of the people who call Assumption College home.  People are what have made this spot on the map so different.

CAMPUS &LOCATION

The College, located on 175 park-like acres, has been at its present location since 1956. It blends  the beauty and tranquility of the New England countryside with the hustle-and-bustle of a major metropolitan area . . . five minutes from downtown Worcester, an hour from Boston and three from New York.

The move to the Salisbury Heights section of the city was dictated when the second major disaster hit the College.  A killer tornado ravaged the old campus June 9, 1953, while a multi-alarm fire destroyed the campus in 1922. Like its athletics teams, the campus has demonstrated a remarkable resiliency.

The College concluded its centennial celebration last year, and has completed more than $60 million in new construction. Assumption College is poised to meet the changing needs of the 'millenial generation.'
