Founded in 1893, Southern Connecticut State University is in the midst of a $230 million building program. Southern comprises six academic schools: the School of Arts and Sciences; the School of Business; the School of Communication, Information, and Library Science; the School of Education; the School of Health and Human Services; and the School of Graduate Studies.
Southern’s traditional approach to education emphasizes the liberal arts and professional studies, giving students in-depth career preparation in a wide range of fields. At the same time, the university encourages students to challenge themselves through a variety of electives.
The university also offers an Honors College. This four-year program replaces most university requirements with team-taught, interdisciplinary courses and a thesis requirement. Enrolling academically superior students, the Honors College encourages participants to work closely with faculty to develop strategies of thinking they can use throughout their lives. The Honors College provides excellent credentials for graduate school and career placement.
