South Easton, Mass. - Saint Michael's College junior forward Jared Silver has been selected as the Northeast-10 Conference Ice Hockey "Player of the Year," as voted upon by the six conference coaches.
Silver finished the regular season with 42 points, including 32 assists, both league-highs in the Northeast-10 and the ECAC Men's East. He netted 10 goals in 25 games. Silver is the first Purple Knight to receive the Northeast-10 Player of the Year Award.
A new award to the Northeast-10 Ice Hockey post season honors, Saint Anselm junior defenseman Brett Smith has been voted the "Defensive Player of the Year." Smith finished with 34 points, including 11 goals and 23 helpers in 25 regular season games.
Junior Jason Rafuse of Saint Anselm College earned "Goaltender of the Year" honors after posting a 2.68 goals against average, a .910 save percentage and a 13-7-1 record in 22 regular season games, playing nearly 1,200 minutes. He is the second Saint Anselm netminder to receive the award in as many years, following Jim Merola who was named "Goalkeeper of the Year" in 2004-2005.
Stonehill College forward Brendan O'Brien earned "Freshman of the Year" honors, after posting 10 goals and 32 assists for 42 points in his first season, which included two power play goals and two game winners. He is the first Skyhawk to receive this award from the Northeast-10. O'Brien tied Silver's 42 points when he added four assists in the Northeast-10 quarterfinal game against Assumption. His 32 assists set a Stonehill single-season record.
Stonehill Head Coach Scott Harlow was selected as "Coach of the Year" by his peers. He has now been named as the Northeast-10/ECAC Division II Coach of the Year on three occasions. Harlow guided the Skyhawks to a 14-10 final record (8-7 ECAC Northeast, 3-2 NE-10) and won 11 of their final 15 outings dating back to December 10th, including a school-record nine-game winning streak. His Skyhawks also tied the school single-season record for victories first set in 1989-90 and tied by the 2001-2002 squad.
The Northeast-10 All Conference First Team includes Silver and forward Alex Watts and defenseman Nick Dancey from Saint Michael's, Smith, Rafuse and forward Josh Hechter from Saint Anselm and O'Brien from Stonehill.
The Northeast-10 Conference Second Team includes Southern New Hampshire's forward Brandon Hammermeister, Saint Anselm forward Chris O'Brien and defenseman Brian Dobler, Stonehill forward Brian Dudley and goaltender Josh Green and Saint Michael's defenseman David Mullins.
