COLCHESTER, Vt. – Former Saint Michael’s College
men’s basketball standouts Chris Cayole ’07
(Burlington, Vt./Rice Memorial) and Brian Monahan ’08
(Kinderhook, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) will continue their
careers in 2009-10, as the duo have recently signed professional
contracts to play in Europe this winter.
Cayole received a deal with the Grevenbroich Elephants, a squad
located just outside Dusseldorf, Germany, that competes in the
Regionalliga league. Cayole, who signed a contract on August 28
that runs until the end of March, has tallied 20-plus points in
multiple scrimmages thus far, and will play his first
regular-season game with Grevenbroich on September 19.
“I am very excited to be out here in Europe and continuing my
basketball career,” said Cayole. “The team I am on is
looking to move up in leagues, and hopefully I can help the team
win games and help the squad move up. I have high hopes for our
team, and I can see us winning our league.”
Monahan, meanwhile, has agreed to play for Jonstrup, an
organization that competes in the Danish Second Division and is
located in Ballerup, approximately 20 minutes outside of
Copenhagen, Denmark. Monahan signed his contract and arrived in
Denmark late last month, and will begin the regular season with
Jonstrup later this month.
“Being out here so far has been a great experience, and I
wouldn’t be out here without the support of my teammates and
coaches throughout high school and college,” said Monahan.
“I hope to play well while I am here, and hope to use this
experience as a jumping-off point to move up to a higher level next
season.”
Both Cayole and Monahan have prior professional experience, as the
duo were teammates last season for the Vermont Frost Heaves of the
Premier Basketball League. Cayole was also a member of the 2007-08
Frost Heaves’ squad that won their second straight American
Basketball Association championship.
Cayole completed a successful four-year career for Saint
Michael’s in 2007. The 6-foot-7-inch forward is currently
sixth in program history with 95 blocked shots, and as a senior in
2006-07, he averaged 13.8 points and six rebounds per game in
helping the Purple Knights to a 16-13 record.
Monahan, also a four-year standout, is 13th in program history with
1,451 points, and sixth with 869 rebounds. He had one of the finest
seasons in program history as a senior in 2007-08, leading the
Northeast-10 Conference with 20.1 points and 9.7 rebounds per
contest.
