South Easton, Mass. – Bentley University
senior guard Jason Westrol (Brielle, N.J.) was named the 2009-2010
Northeast-10 Men’s Basketball Player of the Year as voted by
the conference’s 16 head coaches.
Westrol is the second Bentley player to earn player of the year
accolades and is the first to do so since Jim Ferrer won the award
in 1989. Westrol helped lead the Falcons into the upcoming
Northeast-10 championship for the 30th, time making them the only
NE-10 team to advance to every single championship in the
conference’s history. Westrol is second in the conference in
scoring, as he is averaging 20.7 points per game and is recording
5.3 rebounds and dishing out 3.9 assists per game. He ranks eighth
overall in assists in the conference. In addition, Westrol was
named to the All-Northeast-10 First Team for the second straight
season.
Stonehill College senior guard Randall Stallworth (Toms
River, N.J.) was selected the 2009-2010 Northeast-10
Defensive Player of the Year. Stallworth has helped
Stonehill’s top-ranked defense hold opponents to under
60-points per game (59.0). He is averaging 12.7 points per game,
while shooting .467-percent from the field. Stallworth is also
recording 2.2 rebounds and is among the conference leaders in
assists with 4.0 per game. In addition, he was also named to the
All-Northeast-10 Second Team for the first time in his career.
The College of Saint Rose’s Andre Pope (White
Plains, N.Y.) was tabbed the 2009-2010 Northeast-10
Freshman of the Year. In his first year of collegiate action, Pope
was an instant impact for the Golden Knights. He is averaging 13.4
points per game which is third best among freshman and ranks him in
the top-25 in the Northeast-10. Pope is also averaging 3.9 rebounds
and 3.8 assists per game. In addition, he was named to the
Northeast-10 All-Rookie team.
Stonehill head coach David McLaughlin was
voted the 2009-2010 Northeast-10 Coach of the Year by his peers.
This is the second time in his career that he has been honored
(2006). McLaughlin guided the Skyhawks to their first NE-10 Regular
Season Title since 2006, when they were co-champions with Bentley.
This is Stonehill’s first outright regular season
championship since 1998 and sixth overall. The Skyhawks finished
conference play with a 20-2 record and have secured the top seed in
the upcoming Northeast-10 Championship.
With 16 member institutions the Northeast-10 shares the distinction
of being the largest Division II conference in the country along
with the PSAC and WVIAC. Its 23 championship sports provide
athletic opportunities for over 5,500 student-athletes, the largest
such program of any Division II conference.
