Le Moyne and Bryant Square-Off in NCAA Division II Men’s Lacrosse Semifinals

South Easton, Mass. – On Saturday, May 17 the Dolphins of Le
Moyne College will host the Bulldogs of Bryant University for the
third time this season in the 2008 NCAA Division II Men’s
Lacrosse semifinals. Game time is set for 1 p.m. as both teams eye
a chance to compete for the National Championship on Sunday, May 25
at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. and will face the winner of
the other semifinal match-up between New York Tech and
Limestone.
The two-time defending national champion Dolphins are making their
seventh straight NCAA appearance dating back to 2002. In that time
span, head coach Dan Sheehan’s Dolphins have captured three
national championships. The Bulldogs are making their first ever
NCAA appearance under the guidance of head coach Mike Pressler. In
his two years at the helm the Bulldogs are 25-7.
Prior to this weekend’s NCAA semifinal match-up both teams
previously met on March 21 with the Dolphins defeating the Bulldogs
8-3, however less than two weeks ago, the Bulldogs avenged their
regular season loss with a 5-4 victory in the Northeast-10
Championship game claiming the team’s first ever conference
championship.
Le Moyne (14-1) is led by the 2008 Northeast-10 Player of the Year
Mike McDonald (Latham, N.Y.). The
four-time All Northeast-10 First-Team selection leads the Dolphins
in scoring with 28 goals and 27 assists for 55 points. Senior
attack Brian Cost (Camillus, N.Y.)
follows with the team lead in goals with 38 along with 13 assists
for 51 points. Le Moyne’s offense has averaged 13.27 goals
per game, which is second best in the Northeast-10. On the
defensive side of the field Le Moyne is led by the 2008 NE-10
Defensive Player of the Year, sophomore Drew Bezek
(Lowville, N.Y.). Bezek recorded 25 groundballs and
is part of a defense that has held opponents to only 3.36 goals per
game. Goalkeeper Doug McIver (Altamont,
N.Y.), a Second-Team All Northeast-10 selection, has
a goals against average of 3.51 and has made 102 saves.
Bryant (14-3) is led by a duo of goal scorers, juniors
Kevin Hoagland (Glastonbury, Conn.) and
Bryan Kaufmann (Putnam Valley, N.Y.).
Hoagland, an All NE-10 Second-Team selection, has scored a team-
high 43 goals this year along with 14 assists for 57 points.
Kaufmann follows with 35 goals and 22 assists with 57 points as
well. The 2008 NE-10 Freshman of the Year, Gary Crowley
(Scituate, Mass.) has 22 goals with 11 assists for 33
points. The Bulldogs have scored a conference best 13.76 goals per
game. Defensively, Bryant has held opponents to 6.03 goals per
game, which is second-best in the conference behind Le Moyne.
Bulldogs’ goalkeeper Michael Kennedy (Port
Jefferson Station, N.Y.) has a 6.35 goals against
average and has made 143 saves between the pipes.
Sponsoring 23 championship sports and 15 full-time members, the
Northeast-10 is the second largest NCAA Division II athletic
conference in the nation and sponsors the most championships of any
Division II conference.
