EASTON, Mass. --- Top-seeded Concordia, NY lived up to its ranking stopping Assumption College, 5-1, in the N.C.A.A. Division II East Regional final here FRIDAY.
Concordia will now move on to the Sweet 16 at the N.C.A.A. Division II Nationals hosted by Rockhurst College in Kansas City, MO. That tournament is scheduled for Wednesday through Saturday, May 10-13.
The lone point for the Greyhounds came at No. 2 doubles as junior captain MATT STOPP (Altoona, PA/Altoona) and sophomore ANTONIO RECALDE (Ciudad del Este, Paraguay/San Isadro Labrador) finished their season undefeated (14-0) beating the Concordia Brazilian pair of sophomore RODRIGO TEIXIERA (Vittoria, Brazil) and junior MARCELO FROES (Vittoria, Brazil), 8-5.
The No. 5 seeded Greyhounds finished their season at 18-4 overall and had their winning streak snapped at 12 straight. It was the second time this year that Concordia, now 15-7, had beaten the Hounds . . . having won 7-2 March 18.
This was the Hound's seventh straight regional appearance and the fifth straight year the team advanced to the championship match. They defeated Bloomsburg, PA (5-4) in the classic 2002 championship at Assumption College however had fallen victim to powerful Kutztown, PA in each of the last three years on its home courts.
The exemplary career of senior captain MICHAEL GOLDMAN (Worcester, MA/Doherty) concluded at 53-8 in singles and 60-12 in doubles---both in the top 10 in Hounds tennis annals.
