Southern Connecticut Men; UMass Lowell Women Win Northeast-10 Indoor Track & Field Titles

UMass Lowell Women's Team Captains

NEW HAVEN, Conn. The Southern Connecticut men won every field event and three relays to win the men's team title in the Northeast-10 Conference indoor track and field championships at Moore Fieldhouse.

Southern scored 265 points to easily outdistance second-place UMass Lowell, which scored 136 points. Stonehill was third with 70 points, followed by Bryant with 63, Bentley with 45, Assumption with six and St. Rose with four.

Southern senior Ivan Schmidt (Bridgeport, Conn.) was named the meet's outstanding male athlete and the NE-10 Male Athlete of the Year after winning the high jump with a leap of seven feet, one inch.

Southern graduate student Kyle Greene (Windsor, Conn.) bettered his NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in the triple jump, leading a 1-2-3-4 Owls' finish with a leap of 22 feet, 4.75 inches.

Southern Men's Team Captains

In the women's competition, the Owls' Merlene "Stacey" Egbert (Danbury, Conn.) won the high jump, long jump and triple jump but Southern finished second in the team competition behind UMass Lowell, which scored 229.50 points. Coach Jim Barber's Owls scored 193.50, followed by Stonehill with 70, Bryant with 49, Bentley with 38, Assumption with 33 and St. Rose with 1.

Senior Esia Johnson (Lawrence, Mass.) was named the most outstanding female athlete of the meet. She finished second in the long jump and triple jump and fifth in the 200-meter dash.

The River Hawks' Nicole Plante (North Adams, Mass.) was named the NE-10 Female Athlete of the Year. She finished second in the mile run Saturday with a time of 5:13.23.

Southern's Yvonne Perkins (Danbury, Conn.), who won the weight throw (49-4.5) shared NE-10 Female Freshman of the Year honors with UML's Christina DaLomba (Marston Mills, Mass.). The River Hawks' Andrew Grange (Methuen, Mass.) was the NE-10 Male Freshman of the Year.

Southern coach Jack Maloney earned NE-10 Men's Coach of the Year honors while Gary Gardner of UMass Lowell was the NE-10 Women's Coach of the Year.
