Northeast-10 Weekly Notes:
STONEHILL: Saturday's come-from-behind victory at Saint Michael's lifted Stonehill to its best start in the 35-year varsity history of the program, as the Skyhawks' 15-0 mark tops the 1971-72 squad's 14-0 start in the inaugural season of the program. Stonehill moved up six spots in last week's USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Division II national poll to the #11 position in the rankings, the Skyhawks' highest national spot since March 1995. Stonehill has the distinction of being one of two schools nationally to have both its women's and men's teams ranked in the top 11 of their respective Division II national polls, as the Skyhawk men cracked the NABC top 10 last Tuesday. Only Stonehill and Western Washington have both of its squads ranked in the top 11. Stonehill's current 15-game winning streak matches the second longest such skein in school history, as the 1986-87 squad also won 15 straight en route to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. With Saturday's second half comeback at Saint Michael's, Stonehill has now scored 46 or more points in one half of action on seven occasions this season, with a high-water mark of 58 points coming in the opening half of the November 22nd contest against Bentley. Stonehill's 10-0 conference start is the Skyhawks' best since the 1996-97 squad won their first 11 league outings en route to the Northeast-10 tournament title. Stonehill has already surpassed its entire win total of last season, as Tuesday's triumph over Assumption enabled the Skyhawks to clinch their 35th straight winning campaign. Stonehill is 72-30 (.706) in its last 102 outings since November 2002. Stonehill has won six straight and 39 of 47 match-ups in the series with Saint Michael's following Saturday's triumph, while last Tuesday's win over Assumption was the Skyhawks' 40th victory in the 54-game series between the schools SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT: In two Northeast-10 wins on the week, it was the defense of center Babette Noah which helped lead the Owls. In a 61-44 win over St. Rose, Southern jumped to a 27-14 halftime lead and Noah helped hold Golden Knights' center Petra Kulhankova to just six points and eight rebounds in the game. Noah scored 16 points with 10 rebounds. In a 65-44 win over Franklin Pierce in a battle for second place, Noah helped limit Ravens' center Danielle D'Ettore to six points and one rebound while playing just 22 minutes. The Owls held a 37-12 halftime edge. Noah finished with four points and five rebounds to average 10.0 points and 8.5 rebounds in the two games, extending Southern's win streak to 10 games. Overall, it was the Owls' smothering defense which helped them to sizeable halftime advantages. Coach Joe Frager's team held the two opponents to a combined 31.7 percent shooting from the field (32-101) and just 0.71 percent from three-point range (1-14) with nine blocked shots in the two games. The Owls' season mark for scoring defense is just 44.2 points per game AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL: Following a road tilt at Bryant Monday, No. 13 AIC will have eight of its final 12 games at home. Junior Krystal Pressley (New Haven, Conn.) is 36 points shy of 1,000 for her career. She also is eight 3-pointers shy of tying the program record of 205 held by Christine Frauton '00. Senior Holly Reeves (Arlington, Mass.) added her 500th career point against Stonehill. Sophomore Adrienne Carpenter (Princeton, Mass.) tied her career high with 15 points in her first start of the season versus the Skyhawks, who handed Saint Michael's its first home loss of the season after seven straight wins. The Purple Knights are on pace to set program records for highest 3-point percentage and free throw percentage in a season FRANKLIN PIERCE: Senior Heather Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass.) ranks 15th in Division II with a Conference-leading 86.8-percent (46-53) free-throw shooting percentage so far this season BENTLEY: Bentley, after wins over 13th-ranked AIC and Le Moyne, has now won eight of its last nine. During the two victories last week, Bentley outshot the opponents 45-36 percent, helping to offset the opponents' taking 17.5 more FGA per game ASSUMPTION: Assumption continued their strong defensive play last Saturday as they held Bryant to 57 points, the ninth time this season the 'Hounds held an opponent under 60 points (8-1). Sophomore forward Charde Floyd (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) notched her fourth double-double of the season versus Bryant (11th career). Floyd has scored in double figures in five of her last six games... BRYANT: The Bulldogs continue to struggle on the road with a 2-6 record.
