South Easton, Mass. – Franklin Pierce University sophomore forward Angelika Johansson (Falkenberg, Sweden) has been selected the 2008 Northeast-10 Player of the Year in a vote by the conference’s 14 head coaches.

Johansson has been an essential part of the Franklin Pierce offense that has scored a conference-best 46 goals so far this season. She currently leads the NE-10 in points (52), goals (24) and game-winning goals (7) and is among the nation’s Division II leaders in these categories. Johansson ranks fourth in points per game and third in goals per game nationally. Last year’s freshman of the year, Johansson was also named to the All-Northeast-10 First Team for the second straight season.

The University of Massachusetts Lowell junior goalkeeper Jamie Gillis (North Billerica, Mass.) has been named the 2008 Northeast-10 Goalkeeper of the Year. Gillis ranks in a number of conference goalie categories as she is currently third in shutouts (6), fourth in goals against average (0.98), seventh in save percentage (.785) and tenth in saves (62). An All-Northeast-10 Third Team selection the past two seasons, Gillis was named to the All-Northeast-10 First Team for the first time in her collegiate career.

Franklin Pierce junior defender Rachel Smith (Chichester, N.H.) was selected the 2008 Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year. Smith has helped lead the Franklin Pierce defense that has held opponents to only 0.88 goals per game, which is third best in the Northeast-10. She currently has two goals on the season and was named to the All-Northeast-10 First Team for the first time. Smith earned Second Team honors last season.

Southern Connecticut State University freshman midfielder Jenna Mallico (Milford, Conn.) was selected the 2008 Northeast-10 Freshman of the Year. Mallico currently has six goals, five assists and 17 points this season. In addition, she was named to the All-Northeast-10 First Team and the All-Rookie Team.

Merrimack College head coach Gabe MeJail has been voted the 2008 Northeast-10 Coach of the Year in a vote by his peers. MeJail has guided the Warriors to a 12-3-2 overall record and a conference record of 10-3-1 which secured the third seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Championships.

With 15 member institutions the Northeast-10 is the second largest NCAA Division II athletic conference in the nation. Its 23 championship sports provide athletic opportunities for over 5,500 student-athletes, the largest such program of any Division II conference.
