Northeast-10 Championship Participants Selected to NCAA Women's Tennis Division II Tournament

Bryant and Saint Michael's Qualify For Tournament

The NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Tennis Committee has selected the teams and 16 first- and second-round sites of the 2008 NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championships. Northeast-10 Champion Bryant hosts Philadelphia, while Saint Michael's visits California (Pa.) in the First Round.

Bryant will host Philadelphia University on either Thursday, May 8 or Friday, May 9 in First Round action.  The other first round match at Bryant will feature Slippery Rock and Holy Family.  On the other side of the bracket Saint Michael's will travel and face California of Pennsylvania, while Bloomsburg will face Queens.

Bryant (23-2) earned an automatic bid after winning their fifth straight Northeast-10 Championship last week versus Saint Michael's.  The Bulldogs are led by first singles player Emma Czarnecki (Huntington Woods, Mich.) who is 13-3 in the number one spot.  Doubles partner Chelsea Downing (Cherry Hills Village, Colo.) is 12-4 at second singles.  The duo are undefeated at first doubles with a 12-0 record.  Doubles partners Katharine Francazio (Cranston, R.I.)Lauren Mullen (Braintree, Mass.) and are 14-2 at third doubles.

Saint Michael's enter the NCAA Tournament after winning a school record 15 matches and advancing to the Northeast-10 Championship match.  The Purple Knights are led by a trio of freshman with Deahna Giguere (Oakland, Maine) leading the way at number two singles.  Giguere is currently 8-3 overall in the two spot.  Marran Ranks (Stratham, N.H.) is 8-2 at fifth singles, while Marybeth Ash (Westborough, Mass.) is an impressive 10-1 at sixth singles.

The championships consist of a 16-team single elimination tournament. Each of the following eight regions will conduct two first- and second-round tournaments: East, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, South, Great Lakes, Central, North Central and West.

Sponsoring 23 championship sports and 15 full-time members, the Northeast-10 is the second largest NCAA Division II athletic conference in the nation and sponsors the most championships of any Division II conference.
