All New Haven Battle to Determine 2017 NE10 Champion

The 2017 Northeast-10 Conference Volleyball Championship will pit one team (New Haven) making their 7th appearance in the championship match, and another (Southern Connecticut) that will be competing in their first. Here's how the two teams advance to Saturday's title game in two five-set thrillers tonight at the University of New Haven -

#1 New Haven 3, #5 Stonehill 2

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - For the second straight round of the NE10 Championship, top-seeded New Haven defeated an opponent in five sets as they defeated fifth-seeded Stonehill in the Semifinals tonight in Charger Gymnasium. With the win, the Chargers advanced to the title game for the seventh time in their ten years as a member of the league.

After dropping two of the first three sets, New Haven would take the 4th set, 25-20, to send the match to a deciding fifth set. And for the second time this week, they would win the deciding fifth set, this time sending them to the conference championship final. Caroline Martins and Kali Greathead combined for 29 kills to lead the New Haven offense, while Kristine Rios handed out 28 assists. All three were recognized as All-Conference selections earlier in the day.

#7 Southern Connecticut 3, #2 Saint Anselm 2

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - After dropping the first two sets on Saturday night, Southern Connecticut would go on to win the next three to earn their first-ever trip to the NE10 Volleyball Championship Final. And awaiting them in Saturday's title match is cross-town rival, and top-seed, New Haven. Leanna Jadus, who was named NE10 Player of the Year earlier in the day, and Gabriela Vazquez each registered 22 kills for the Owls to lead the offensive attack. Alexandra Jurgens was fantastic in setting the table as she handed out 48 assists in the five-set thriller.

The win not only sends the Owls to the title match tomorrow at 5pm at New Haven, it also assures them a spot in the NCAA Championship East Regional field.
