Ten Northeast-10 Baseball Student-Athletes Named Capital One Academic All-District

SOUTH EASTON, Mass. – Ten from Northeast-10 Conference member institutions were named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District Baseball Team last week, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The selections recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. For a full list of the All-District Team, please see below.

Merrimack College had three players selected, while two players from Southern New Hampshire University were honored. American International College, Bentley University, Franklin Pierce University, the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Pace University all had one selection.

Representing Merrimack was junior infielder Eddie Newton, senior outfielder Mark O’Flynn and senior designated hitter Joe Mantoni.

Newton, a Sports Medicine major with a 3.40 GPA, is hitting .318 this season, while O’Flynn is hitting .288 while carrying a 3.70 GPA as a Sociology major. Mantoni, who is hitting .270 with a team-high 36 RBI, owns a 3.90 GPA as an Economics major.

The All-District Team included three pitcher selections, all of which hailed from Northeast-10 schools from the state of New Hampshire. Franklin Pierce senior Ryan Thompson (pictured), a Mass Communication major with a 3.80 GPA, earned recognition after going 4-1 with a 2.28 ERA in 47.1 innings this season.

A pair of So. New Hampshire righthanders made up the other two selections in junior Alex Powers (3.30 GPA) and senior Derrick Sylvester (3.89 GPA). Powers, a Business major, has seven saves and a 2.39 ERA while striking out 45 in 37.1 innings. Sylvester, a Psychology major, is 6-2 with a 1.53 ERA and has struck out 68 in 64.2 innings.

American Int’l junior outfielder Dave Clark also earned the recognition, as he has a 3.60 GPA as a Criminal Justice major. Clark hit .345 with two homers and 27 RBI this season.

Bentley junior infielder Will Brennan, a Corporate Finance & Accounting major with a 3.42 GPA, also earned the All-District nod. Brennan is hitting .271 with 32 runs scored in 2013.

UMass Lowell sophomore catcher Jacob O’Keefe, who sports a 3.97 GPA as an Undeclared Business major, was named to the team after hitting .229 with 19 RBI for the River Hawks.

Pace senior outfielder Brandon Martineson, a Finance major with a 3.34 GPA, has hit .312 with 19 extra-base hits and 37 RBI this season for the Setters. He also earned the prestigious Capital One All-District honor.

The Northeast-10 Conference is an association of 16 NCAA Division II colleges and universities located in New England and New York that is committed to supporting balanced academic and athletic opportunities for more than 6,000 student-athletes. Each year, 4,000 of those student-athletes compete in conference championships in 23 sports, making the NE-10 the largest DII conference in the country.
