Saint Rose's Purcell Earns Medalist Honors
VALATIE, N.Y. – The Le Moyne Dolphins held off defending champion Southern New Hampshire by one stroke to win the 2016 NE-10 Men's Golf Championship on Monday from Olde Kinderhook Golf Club. Saint Rose's Corey Purcell earned medalist honors, finishing atop the individual leaderboard by four strokes.
Entering the final round with a five-stroke lead, the Dolphins withstood a round-two comeback by the Penmen, to win their second NE-10 title and first since 2008. Le Moyne finished with a 586 total team score, while SNHU tallied a 587.
Le Moyne had three golfers finish in the top six with Jonathan Petrin leading the way with a 71-74-145 to finish in a tie for third. Last year's NE-10 medalist John Clare tied with teammate Joe Petrin for sixth place, as the two finished at 146. Clare posted the second lowest total during the opening round with a 70, while Joe Petrin topped all during the final round with a three-under par 69.
Purcell clung to a one-stroke lead after the first round and maintained his consistent play down the stretch to pick up the individual title for the host Golden Knights. He carded a 71 on Day 2 after shooting a 69 in the opening round to finish with a four-under par 140 over the two-day tournament. Purcell was the main reason why Saint Rose posted its best-ever finish at the NE-10 Championships, taking third with a 597 overall.
Bentley finished in fourth with a 603 team score, while Franklin Pierce took fifth with a 611. Assumption (6th – 618), American International (7th – 624), Saint Anselm (8th – 630), Saint Michael's (9th – 639) and Adelphi (10th – 671) rounded out the 10-team field.
SNHU's Etienne Bourgoin shot an even-par 72-72-144 to finish as the individual runner-up. Bentley's Doug Kulikowski and SNHU's John Clancy both finished in a three-way tie with Johnny Petrin for third. Those four joined Purcell as the five members of the 2016 NE-10 Men's Golf All-Championship Team.
