AIC, Assumption Fill Tennis Head Coaching Jobs

Greyhounds Elevate Pirez; Yellow Jackets Welcome DeVarennes.

MANSFIELD, Mass. – A pair of Northeast-10 Conference tennis coaching jobs have been filled in the past couple days, with the women's tennis season beginning in just more than two weeks. American International welcomes a new face, while Assumption promoted a familiar one to lead their respective tennis programs.

AIC Hires DeVarennes to Lead Women's Tennis Program

DeVarennes joins the Yellow Jackets after a pair of seasons as the tennis graduate assistant at Springfield College. Prior to the start of his coaching career, he played at Springfield from 2013-17 as the No. 1 singles player each season and was team captain as a senior.

In addition to Springfield, DeVarennes has a wide range of professional experience, spending time at the Pittsfield Country Club, Hartford Tennis Club and Canyon Ranch as a tennis professional or assistant tennis professional. He also interned with the NFL's Buffalo Bills in 2016 and in athletic operations are the University of Connecticut in 2016-17.

From the AD…..

"We are extremely excited about the addition of Tanner DeVarennes to the athletic department," Matt Johnson said. "Tanner has good playing experience and has been coaching locally over the past couple of years.  During this time, he has been recruiting prospective student-athletes to the greater Springfield area.  Tanner is passionate about the sport of tennis and has a strong vision about the type of program he wants to develop at AIC."

Greyhounds Promote Pirez to Coach Men's and Women's Programs

Assumption elevated women's tennis coach Megan Pirez to head coach of both the men's and women's programs late last week, as the Greyhounds looked to fill their vacant men's tennis coaching position.

Pirez enters her second season as head coach of the women's team this fall, after leading the Greyhounds to an NE10 quarterfinal appearance and a 9-7 overall record. Julia Chappell, Assumption's standout singles player, was named NE10 Player of the Year under Pirez's guidance.

As a player at Assumption, Pirez helped the program reach the NE10 Tournament three times over four seasons, before graduating in 2008. She served as a co-captain in her senior season.

From the AD…..

"We are thrilled that Megan Pirez will serve as head coach for both Assumption's Men and Women's Tennis programs," said Christine Lowthert, Interim Director of Athletics. "Megan has had a long-time association with the College and has a thorough appreciation for the academics, athletics, and development of our student-athletes.

Since 2013, she has helped turn around the College's tennis programs, specifically on the women's side, playing a key role in the creation of practice plans, recruiting, and training. We know that the passion and expertise she has brought to the women's team will carry over into her new duties as the head coach of the men's team, breathing new life into the program, and positioning them as top competitors in the NE10 Conference."

The NE10 is an association of 14 diverse institutions serving student-athletes across 24 NCAA Division II sports. Together we build brilliant futures by embracing the journey of every student-athlete.

Each year, 4,500 student-athletes compete in conference championships, making the NE10 the largest DII conference in the country in terms of sport sponsorship. Leading the way in the classroom, on the field and within the community, the NE10 is proud of its comprehensive program and the experience it provides student-athletes.
